Moments of Beauty

Wear your scars proudly. I wish I could remember where I read about this model—I do recall she had a bad accident while on holiday, and took a long time to recover. She eventually went back to work and made the decision (rare in the fashion world) to show her scars rather than hiding them. Beautiful inside and out. And that gorgeous linen shirt, too...

A Beautiful Abandoned Château
Stunning photos of an abandoned château in Belgium by Bryan Sansivero, a photographer who has spent his career seeking out abandoned locations to shoot.

Getting Dance to Look Right Onscreen
Interesting New Yorker piece on how the intricacies of getting a dance performance to look right in movies, from the crash course needed by a non-dancing actor to the complexity of filming bodies in motion.

After a Late Start, An Artist's Big Break: Michelle Obama's Official Portrait
Profile of artist Amy Sherald, commissioned last month by the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery to paint the official portrait of former first lady Michelle Obama. Love her work—and, after reading about her life up to now, hugely admire her personally, too.

75 Years Later, Now Voyager Remains a Poignant Depiction of Mental Illness
Lovely essay by Angelica Jade Bastién on how the 1942 film Now Voyager is not only one of star Bette Davis's best performances, but an unexpectedly nuanced and sympathetic depiction of mental illness—and how it helped her cope with her own struggles.

Only Once Away My Son
Gorgeous new collaborative piece by ambient music pioneer Brian Eno and Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine. Hope there's more of this from them in the future...

Ginger Shakin' Beef
Perfect for a weeknight when you're starved and want something substantial, this recipe from Jamie Oliver's new cookbook 5 Ingredients: Quick and Easy Food is just that—quick and easy to do.

A Brief Pause

I'm a little under the weather here, so posts will be fewer for a bit. For today, a space that would positively be a pleasure to languish in.

This week's links. Enjoy.

Melbourne Modern
Take a tour of a sunny Edwardian home in Melbourne, gently updated. That's the dining area above.

11 Unbelievably Beautiful Sci-Fi Movies for the Ages
Vanity Fair has put together a list of visually stunning sci-fi films, to get you in the mood for the new Blade Runner 2049. I need to rewatch some of these. Classics.

Bodies in Motion
Mesmerising short videos by Niv Novak of dancers in slow motion, seemingly floating in mid-air. Via @mymodernmet.

Survival of the Kindest
Helpful ways to bring compassion into your daily life. A useful reminder if you're feeling a bit burned out with all the meanness in the world right now. Even better—kindness is catching.

Make Your Wardrobe a Work of Art
These designers make a strong argument for fashion as art form—have a look and get inspired.

Leonard Cohen Says Goodbye
"The Flame", the final book of poetry by Leonard Cohen, was released this week. The poems were selected and ordered by the author, and include finished poems as well as illustrations, song lyrics, prose pieces and material from Cohen's notebooks.

The 20,000-Year-Old History of Red Pigments in Art
Fascinating overview of the colour red in art history, from the red ochre used by Neanderthal artists in their cave art to Lithol, used by Rothko in a series of murals in 1962 to dire effect—the untested new pigment turned out to be highly light sensitive.

Chocolate Zucchini Cake
A useful recipe to have in your repertoire, this version by French cookery writer Clotilde of Chocolate and Zucchini (no, uh, relation) is an elegant take on a modern classic (the addition of a dash of coffee is genius).

Simple Pleasures

Music. Through happy times, through dark times and everything in between, it soothes, energizes, commiserates, inspires and uplifts.

A Brief Pause

Taking a little time out as this very unsettled weather has my head acting like a barometer — have a lovely day and back soon.
