Houshi
Houshi is a ryokan (a Japanese traditional inn) located in Komatsu, Japan. Besides being the 2nd oldest hotel in the world, it's been in the same family for 46 consecutive generations. This is a lovely, bittersweet short film about how its owners struggle to continue its legacy in the modern era.

Anti-Fashion: OMA's Philosophy

When the U.S. Government Employed Artists
Great overview of the Federal Art Project, a subdivision of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Designed to help the country recover from the Great Depression, it was part of President Roosevelt's New Deal—and launched the careers of some of the pioneers of Abstract Expressionism.

Netflix has a great series on at the moment that explores various types of design, with profiles of creatives who are tops in their field. Highly recommended—particularly enjoyed the ones covering Illustration, Graphic Design and Set Design.

Better Than Paris Crepes

The Case For Shyness
From The Atlantic: "Joe Moran’s book Shrinking Violets is a sweeping history that doubles as a (quiet) defense of timidity." This sounds like a fascinating read—and a great article on how one defines shyness. As a very shy person myself, I found this particularly resonant.

The World of Art, Gluten-Free
French graphic artist Arthur Coulet has created a cheeky Tumblr called the Gluten-Free Museum, which takes classic paintings and removes anything with gluten in them. It's funny, but also interesting to see how gluten is such a big part of the dietary history of humankind — some images are quite startling when transformed. Via FastCo.

Renaissance Selfies: The First Book of Fashion
Fascinating slide show of images from a book by a 16th century 'fashion blogger' who documented his life in clothes through portraits of himself commissioned from various artists. Cambridge historian Ulinka Rublack has edited a new edition of this extraordinary book, published by Bloomsbury.
