The Monday after spring Daylight Savings is always tough, but a bedroom like this is a good one to wake up in any time. See the rest of this beautiful Montreal apartment here.

Buffet

This week's links. Enjoy.

A Book-Filled Toronto Loft
Take a tour of the lovely loft home of Chelsea and Ryan, filled with books, vintage finds and souvenirs from their travels. Love this one.

Visually Satisfying Flower and Botanical Compositions
These tranquil and utterly beautiful flower and botanical arrangements by artist and yoga teacher Ja Soon Kim will instantly make you feel better.

The Spectacular 60's Fashion Film You've Never Heard Of
I so need to see this. AnOther magazine reviews the campy 1964 comedy What A Way To Go!, starring Shirley MacLaine as a sumptuously dressed perennial widow.

On the Accidental Origins of Beloved Books
Fun article on the quirky origins of such classics as Pippi Longstocking, Frankenstein, The Hobbit and Gone With the Wind.

When the U.S. Government Employed Artists
Great overview of the Federal Art Project, a subdivision of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Designed to help the country recover from the Great Depression, it was part of President Roosevelt's New Deal—and launched the careers of some of the pioneers of Abstract Expressionism.

Abstract: The Art of Design
Netflix has a great series on at the moment that explores various types of design, with profiles of creatives who are tops in their field. Highly recommended—particularly enjoyed the ones covering Illustration, Graphic Design and Set Design.

Better Than Paris Crepes
True or not, this is definitely a great recipe for crepes, with detailed instructions for beginners. Will definitely be trying this one out soon.

Minimalist in Montreal

Love this inspired transformation of an 1880s Montreal rowhouse by Mark Fekete and Viviana de Loera, co-founders of interdisciplinary design firm MARK + VIVI. Especially like the clever use of recycled materials in the kitchen. Fantastic. More here on Dwell.

Mark Fekete and Viviana de Loera, co-founders of interdisciplinary design firm MARK + VIVI, happily took on the challenge of building their dream home in a transitioning Montreal neighborhood. Working with a relatively small footprint that gave them just 1,100 total square feet of finished living space, the couple used simple and minimal materials to embrace and celebrate the original character of the 1880 home. Space was thoughtfully maximized by opening up the ceiling to expose both the original and new beams, removing partition walls to create an open floor plan, and converting the crawlspace beneath the home into usable storage. The result is a bright, quirky, and imaginative blend of old and new.

Designed in 2013 by Atelier Barda, this stunning weekend home, located on the east side of Pinnacle Mountain in Frelighsburg, Canada, is truly the most refined kind of cottage living. Love all the books. Perfect. More here on Home Adore.

Modern Rural

Surrounded on all sides by sweeping hayfields, this striking modern home in the Canadian west is an ode to rural life. Created by industrial designer Omer Arbel for his colleague Randy Bishop and family, the house is constructed from Randy's extensive collection of 100-year-old beams salvaged from a series of warehouses he owns — all preserved intact. Not a single reclaimed plank was cut or altered, giving the home its distinctive geometric look, described by Arbel as "a piece of origami ... draped over the landscape." Stunning.  More here on Dwell.

Atelier: Herriott Grace

I was visiting Herriott Grace recently and once again was reminded why it's one of my favourite online shops — the combination of gorgeous photography and lovely goods has me swooning every time. The story behind the company is lovely, too — Toronto-based designer Nikole Herriott loved the beautiful wooden spoons and bowls her British Columbia-based father Lance would make for her, and eventually persuaded him that others would, too.
