Photographer Hanne van der Woude combined a love of the Dutch landscape and a fascination with natural redheads (whom she decided to photograph seriously after reading in an English newspaper that they were a vanishing breed), when she shot this beautiful series of images — a series with a cinematic quality rather than the more usual documentary approach. The final pictures of 150 redheads are now published in the book MC1R – Natuurlijk rood haar (MC1R is the gene that controls skin and hair colour), with accompanying texts by Wim van Sinderen and Erik Sistermans. See lots more stunning photography from her project here. Via Lens Culture.
This beautiful little porcelain bowl (it’s just the right size for me to hold cupped in my hands) was the start of what is now a small collection of bowls made by local potters. I love the coppery tones of the glaze and the interesting texture, created by scratching into the glaze before firing.
(Lovely Holly of the fab Decor8 was kind enough to ask me to be a part of her guest blogger series A Few of My Favorite Things — this is one of five objects from my home that I posted about. You can see the rest of my contribution here. Thanks again, Holly!)
Collage artist Kareem Rizk is having another busy month! To start, Kareem recently joined Artsprojekt and has just released a huge range of products — such as the mug shown above — with more coming soon, too. He's also showing original collages (as well as some prints) in Cut and Paste, an international group exhibition of selected collage artists at Galleri KG52 in Stockholm, Sweden. Besides showing his work in gallery settings, Kareem also takes on freelance work — currently he's working on rock & roll-themed illustrations for a brand new range of designer t-shirts by White With One, due to be released in September. And, to round things off nicely, he'll also be participating in a group show at the Art Whino Gallery, scheduled to tour Washington DC, New York, California and Art Basel Miami Beach!
