These delicately beautiful gouache paintings were created by artist Hans Mielich for Kleinodienbuch der Herzogin Anna von Bayern, or The Jewel Book of Anna von Bayern. Two years in the making, the book was completed in 1555, with over one hundred meticulously hand painted pages recording the jewelry owned by the Duchess, as well as some belonging to her husband the Duke. The entire book is online at the Bavarian State Library, but you can find many more samples on BibliOdyssey, where I first saw it. Beautiful jewels that are as lovely today as when they were first made, centuries ago ...
Eccentrics, who have given the world so much fun with their idiosyncratic approach to life. Art, literature, fashion, film, interior design, graphic design, science and more all owe a huge debt to those who march to the beat of their own drum. (Photograph of Stephen Calloway by James Merrell)
P.S. Highly recommended supplementary reading: English Eccentrics by Edith Sitwell, a lovely read by someone who was herself a famous eccentric.
