I usually need props when I am alone eating or drinking, but at my favourite coffee shop, I can just sit and look out the window and feel completely comfortable.
Isn't it hard to find a good independent coffee shop? Here in Connecticut, we have Starbucks Starbucks and more Starbucks. Don't get me wrong I love Starbucks, but chains just don't have the same feel as random little cafes to discover on a corner :)
Ugh... I *don't* love Starbucks. Starbucks, Pete's, et al are the reason places like Lori's fave little cafe can't make it, that and this economic disaster sweeping the world... But I digress.
I am so sorry for your loss, Lori. I can't imagine losing the only independent cafe in my town, because well, I live in San Francisco and we have more independent coffee shops it seems than chain ones.
But you all are right... independent cafe's offer so much more than a chain could ever. Personality for one, of the place and the people, relaxation which is something you just can't get in a chain that's pumping out lattés on a conveyor belt, and charm which comes only with something that is one of a kind.
Thanks, all! It was lovely — started by an older Dutch couple who were homesick for the great local cafés in Holland. Very European, and the kind of place where you could spend hours and no one minded. Alas, they retired, and (despite promises to the contrary) the new owners changed it out of all recognition, turning the space into a trendy wine bar. The good news is that friends of friends have started one recently that sounds great — will be going soon to have a look!
By day (or, depending on the deadline, by night) I'm a Canadian collage illustrator. Since 2006, the automatism blog is where I share whatever I find inspiring, interesting, or simply beautiful in interiors, design, art, illustration and other creative fields.

To the Independent Cafe, three cheers!
Independence is key. Beautiful photo.
Cheers.
