Private jokes. Whether they're between you and a loved one, friends, or in the family, they're often tied to a time and place, are completely baffling to outsiders, and an ever renewable source of fun — and are often reduced over time to a shorthand, with a single word or phrase conjuring up helpless giggles.

Simple things are the best!
Amen, Federica.
And, though you might think me wacky. I have private jokes - with myself! Those inexplicable little thoughts that make one giggle. Once I had a pretty good one & I could not stop laughing out loud. An ex (there's a reason why) asked what was so funny. I told him. It was something that I'd witnessed as a little girl in a large family gathering, a wedding probably. It is really funny. He said, along these lines: "That's stupid & so are you. Childish." He was humorless, so I should have expected it. But to call a grownup's childhood hilarious memory/joke "childish?" How mean is that? Like I said, he is an ex & I see him frowning his way through book signings & so on around town. I just think when I see ladies considering their options re: him..."No, he's awful. He's so mean you can't believe it." (His outburst at me was one of about 1,000, I wasn't being overly sensitive.)
He was not a simple pleasure!
But your automatism surely is one of mine. Lovely evening to you & to Federica.
xo Susan
