Becoming lost in a really good book — the kind where you're completely absorbed in the plot and the characters, to the point where you're sad when you finish it. Once, when off sick from work, I didn't get much sleep (which I really needed) as I was utterly absorbed in the novel Possession by A.S. Byatt, ending up reading it all day and far into the night, too. What books have you fallen in love with?

Oh, it's been too long since I've even read a book... I need to make the time! Two I see in my bookcase that were such favorites are Snowflower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See and Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende.
That photograph makes my heart flutter.
The photograph is so gorgeous.
The last book I lost myself in completely was Anna Karenina. I've been hearing about Possession for years. May check it out...thanks! I do enjoy your blog very much.
I too loved Possession. It piqued my interest in Christina Rossetti.
I like most of Byatt's work and the work of her sister Margaret Drabble. Iris Murdoch fits right in with these 2. I think she must be their inspiration and I believe one of them wrote a thesis on her or some such thing.
2 more that I found positively life-changing are The Unbearable Lightness of Being and The English Patient.
Oh,
And One Hundred Years of Solitude.
I'm trying to get my son to read this one. Magical!
Another stunning image.
Becoming lost in a good book IS one of the most sublime things! I also lost myself in Possession. Others that I have been absorbed by include Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close as well as Middlesex. And if I need comfort, Jane Austen's Persuasion does it for me every single time.
What a beautiful image...such an air of anticipation about it.
Thank you everyone for sharing your books. I have a copy of Anna Karenina sitting by the bed waiting to be read. My recent favourites aren't classics, but they were truly absorbing. Perfume by Patrick Suskind and We Need to Talk about Kevin by Lionel Shriver.
To Kill a Mockingbird and Of Mice and Men are all time favorites.
I think I'm going to have to add a few more titles to the reading list ...
Thanks everyone!
:-)
Love in a time of Cholera . . . there are so many, but unfortunately it's been ages since I've had time to become completely absorbed in a good book.
I'm so glad you posted this, I've been looking for new reads that will completely suck me in like my (embarrassing) obsession with Twilight did.
mmmm....I love books. Suck you in reads?
Anne of Green Gables
City of Thieves
The Blind Assassin
A Thousand Day in Venice
Farewell I'm Bound to Leave You
- to name a few!
